The Rotator Cuff: Your Shoulder’s Hidden Engine
The shoulder joint boasts the greatest range of motion of any joint in the body, a feat made possible by a sophisticated group of muscles and tendons known as the rotator cuff. Rotator cuff injuries are incredibly common, affecting athletes and non-athletes alike, and are a frequent reason for visits to our Silibin branch. Understanding the anatomy and function of this “engine” is the first step toward effective treatment and recovery.
- Anatomy and Function: Your rotator cuff is comprised of four muscles: the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis. Their tendons form a “cuff” over the head of the humerus (upper arm bone), working in harmony to lift and rotate your arm while keeping the joint stable within its socket.
How Rotator Cuff Injuries Feel
Symptoms can develop suddenly from an injury or gradually from overuse and degeneration. Pay attention to these common signs:
- Pain: A characteristic deep, dull ache in the shoulder. The pain often worsens when you lie on the affected side at night, disrupting sleep.
- Weakness: Difficulty with simple tasks like lifting your arm overhead to comb your hair or reaching behind your back.
- Range of Motion Limitation: You may find it difficult or painful to lift your arm out to the side (abduction) or rotate it outward.
- Impingement Signs: A sharp, pinching pain that occurs with overhead activities, caused by the rotator cuff tendons being squeezed between the bones of the shoulder.
